What works, what irks

A review of stuff that works, or doesn't. Lessons learnt kind of thing. The OCD me wants to do it all systematically but someone will land on mars before that happens so here goes random...

Works - Restored sliding doors
which were in tatters and well rotten. Surgically restored with precision, and a circular saw.

Works because...
  • collaboration with my father who is great to work with on a technical level (he was an engineer)
  • suck-it and see approach, without rush

Irks - Vanity botch

looks not-too-bad here, but trust me it's shit

Irks because...

  • Square peg into round hole syndrome. Worktop from wrong size leftover. Mirror doors too tall.
  • Too much storage. Overload on Ikea mentality. Chuck the shit out, don't build extra storage.
  • Coming up with an idea and having it "approved" by a loved one then not thinking about it any more. Sleep on it and come to your own decision instead.

Works - Office

works, apart from the overloaded in-tray, and uninstalled windows
in the background (real windows, not computer windows)
Works because...

  • Cosy, out of view of bedspace (above), and divided from other areas (kitchen, lounge etc)
  • Back to the corner, good chi and all that

Irks - Period mishmash

nice floor though

Irks because...

  • mixing period styles looks shit. Match it right or go modern
  • tight budget, living in property, cluttered site, mental health problems etc all build their way in
...to be continued...
